5 Spring Gardening Tips for Faith and Renewal

Spring boasts potential. The season doesn’t instantly bloom into the cheery season that it is, however. It takes 2 seasons of continual steady, meticulous work to get it to a place that we can appreciate and enjoy once it wakes up. The season arrives gently, unfolding life in its own time. In the same way, our spirits are lovingly renewed by God, often in ways we don’t immediately see.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Renewal and New Life

We often don’t think of fall and winter when spring finally arrives, right? However, flowers don’t bloom without the intricate breakdown of organic matter that fall produces. Millions of microorganisms in the earth break down leaves and plant matter that fall on the ground after the harvest. In doing so, what’s produced is not just soil but nutrient-rich, organic matter, or humus that’s well-aerated by worms and tiny bugs slowly breaking down matter.

“For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come...” — Song of Solomon 2:11-12

5 Tips for Faithfully Preparing Your Garden

We can look at our faith in the same way as the soil in our gardens. It takes a steady commitment to check in with Him daily, weekly, or monthly depending on our schedules. Whatever your day brings, touching base with the Word of God helps to nourish our faith.

Here are five tips to prepare your garden this spring, each with a deeper meaning for the soul:

1. Clear away what has passed

Remove dead leaves and debris from the soil. Tip: discard debris but set aside organic matter to reuse or compost later.

Symbolic reflection: Let go of what no longer brings life—old burdens, regrets, or worries. Trust that making space allows new growth to begin.

2. Turn and prepare the soil

Loosen the earth so it can receive new seeds.

Tip: Dig in the dead leaves and organic matter you set aside. It will break down as nutrient-rich compost for the earth.

Symbolic reflection: A softened heart is open to God’s work. Even seasons that feel like disruption can be preparation for something new.

3. Plant with intention

Choose seeds that will flourish in their time.

Tip: Choose seeds that bloom at varying times during the growing season for continual blooms and harvest.

Symbolic reflection: The thoughts and habits we nurture shape what grows within us. Sow seeds of kindness, patience, and faith.

4. Water faithfully

Give your garden what it needs to grow and thrive.

Tip: Water your garden in the early morning hours to avoid mid-day burn and late-day fungus and disease.

Symbolic reflection: Water reminds us of the Holy Spirit—life-giving, cleansing, and renewing. Just as plants depend on water, we are sustained by God’s presence within us.

5. Be patient with the process

Growth doesn’t happen overnight.

Tip: Journal what you notice in the garden to enjoy the present and anticipate what’s next.

Symbolic reflection: Trust in God’s timing. What is unseen today may be quietly taking root for tomorrow.

Spring Showers Brings May Flowers

Spring Showers Brings May Flowers. You’ve heard of this saying, I’m sure. It’s a popular proverb, meaning that difficult, rainy times in April (adversity) lead to beautiful, blooming flowers in May. Water sustains life.

Today, we’re in the middle of a very rainy season and many areas are faced with the threat of flooding. Winter produced lots of snow and the runoff from snow melt threatens homes near rivers and lakes. It’s hard to imagine a garden of spring blossoms while the ground is sitting under water.

Let’s say a prayer for those facing uncertainty this spring.

God of mercy and renewal,
as waters rise and fear grows, protect those at risk.
When we cannot see new life, give us patience and hope—
trusting You are still at work beneath it all.

Amen.
