Have you heard these dreaded words yet this summer? It’s a wonderful season to slow down, reconnect as a family, and discover God’s goodness in everyday moments. While the longer days can be exciting, they can also bring those familiar words:

“I’m bored!”

Sometimes the best summer moments aren’t the expensive trips or elaborate plans—they’re the simple experiences shared with the people we love. A walk through the neighbourhood, a backyard camp out, a family picnic, or a spontaneous game can become cherished memories for years to come.

When “Mom, I’m Bored!” Becomes the Summer Theme

I was on vacation recently and I visited with my family in Prince Edward County. My sister brought my niece with her to visit for a couple of weeks as well—what a lovely surprise! After a couple of fun-filled beach days I could see the RBF (resting bored face) surface on her face even though she was kindly trying to hide it. What else can we do together as a family that doesn’t cost a lot of money but that would make for a fun time for everyone?

I wish I had brought the UCB Radio “Fight Summer Boredom” FREE printable with me. It was created to help families, like ours, turn those moments of boredom into opportunities for fun, creativity, adventure, and connection.

Visit a Splash Pad

Pack snacks, towels, and sunscreen for a refreshing afternoon. Encourage children to enjoy the simple gift of play and spend time laughing together.

Water Balloon Games

Try relay races, target challenges, or friendly competitions. Focus on fun, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

 

Nature Adventures the Whole Family Can Enjoy:

Collect Natural Treasures

Gather interesting rocks, leaves, pine cones, or flowers. Create a nature display at home to remember your adventures.

Stargazing Night

Look for constellations and planets together. Bring blankets and spend time enjoying the beauty of the night sky.

Turn playground visits into mini adventures by trying a different park in your community. Compare favourite slides, climbing structures and play areas.

Library Adventure

Visit your local library and participate in summer reading programs. Let each child choose books that spark their curiosity.

Community Kindness Project

Deliver baked goods, write encouraging notes, help a neighbour, or volunteer together as a family.
