How Does God Speak To You?

I had the best feeling the other day.

I was looking out my window at the gardens behind my house and suddenly felt completely blessed. It’s hard to explain, but I was overcome with feelings of love, warmth and gratitude—not just for my own life, but for all creation.

It made me stop and wonder: was this God speaking to me?

After all, God is love.

How God Speaks to Us

For some people, God speaks through prayer. Others feel close to Him through worship, music or reading the Bible. Some experience His presence through people or unexpected moments in life.

I think God knows how to reach each of us because He created us.

For me, I often feel closest to Him when I’m out in nature. Walking through a forest, I’m always amazed by the beauty around me. The trees are alive and growing, just like we are. The flowers bloom at exactly the right time. The seasons change without us having to think about it.

How does He do that?

Nature reminds me that there is something much bigger than us at work.

What If God Was One of Us?

You’ve probably heard Joan Osborne’s 1995 hit song One of Us. The song asks a simple but thought-provoking question: What if God was one of us?

It’s one of my favourite secular songs. I always listen to UCB Radio (listen online here), but one day I randomly switched stations and it happened to be playing.

Hearing the song brought me back to the feeling I’d had while looking out the window earlier that week. It got me thinking about how God speaks to us.

We often expect Him to speak in big, dramatic ways, but sometimes He speaks through the everyday things we might otherwise overlook.

Maybe that’s why the song caught my attention. Maybe God was using it to soften my heart a little.

When I first heard One of Us, I was fascinated by the questions it asks.

“What if God was one of us?”

Whether you agree with the song or not, it gets you thinking.

A colleague once said something about prayer that stuck with me.

“Think of it as having a conversation with a friend.”

That was a lightbulb moment for me.

Sometimes I think we can make God feel distant when He’s actually much closer than we realize.

Finding God in Everyday Moments

The more I think about it, the more I believe God often speaks through the ordinary moments in life.

For me, it was looking out of a window and feeling overwhelmed with gratitude.

For someone else, it might be a walk in the woods, a conversation with a friend, a Bible verse, a prayer, or even a song on the radio.

God doesn’t always speak in ways we expect.

Looking back, I think that’s what happened to me that day.

God wasn’t speaking through a dramatic sign or a booming voice from heaven. He was simply reminding me that He was there.

For a brief moment, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for my life, for creation and for the God who made it all.

How does God speak to you?

P.S. God is good, and I’d happily share a seat on the bus with Him any day of the week.
