A few simple ways to make the most of the autumn season.

The days are getting shorter, and there’s a chill in the evening air. The leaves are turning brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red, bringing a special kind of beauty to the season. Fall always seems to pass by so quickly, making this the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the simple pleasures of autumn while they last.

1. Go for a walk to see the fall colours

There’s nothing quite like getting outside on a crisp autumn day and enjoying the colours of the changing leaves. If you don’t live near trees, find a local trail, park or scenic neighbourhood with mature trees and take your time meandering beneath the red, orange and golden trees. Take the dog, grab a coffee to go, take a few photos, and enjoy the fresh air and crunchy leaves under foot while the colours are at their best.

2. Make some hot apple cider

Fill your home with the delicious smell of autumn by making a batch of hot apple cider. Simmer apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a few orange slices for a heartwarming, seasonal drink. It’s perfect to enjoy after a walk among the colourful trees, share a batch with friends on a chilly afternoon, or curl up on the couch with family and savour the taste of fall.

3. Carve a pumpkin

Pumpkin carving is a classic fall activity and a fun way to get into the fall spirit. Pick up a pumpkin at your local pumpkin patch, find a design that you love, and spend an afternoon carving your creation. Whether you go for a traditional spooky face or something a little more creative, it’s a lovely way to embrace the season. Don’t forget to save the seeds for roasting, too!

4. Visit a farm and see the animals

Spend an afternoon enjoying the countryside. Many local farms open their doors to visitors in autumn for family-friendly gatherings and time with the animals. Soak up the relaxed autumn atmosphere. You may even stumble upon a local road-side stand selling fresh apples, homemade treats or pumpkins to take home. It’s a simple seasonal outing that feels like a true fall tradition.

5. Have a cozy bonfire evening

End the day with a cozy bonfire in the backyard. Gather around the fire with warm blankets, sip some hot apple cider that you made earlier, and toast marshmallows with the kids for a little extra fun. Fall is the perfect time to have a bonfire as the nights are cool making the fire feel more inviting. Have some friends over, or enjoy a quiet evening with family. If you have yard brush to clear away, you tidy up while enjoying the fire, as long as local regulations and fire safety conditions allow. It’s a wonderful way to make some memories before winter arrives.

Autumn reminds us that every season has its own beauty, and there’s something special about taking the time to appreciate it.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)

Fall weekends don’t have to be elaborate to be special. Sometimes it’s the simple pleasures — colourful walks, hot apple cider, pumpkin carving, a visit to the farm, and evenings around a bonfire — that make this time of year so memorable.

So, make the most of the autumn season while it’s here. Get outside, embrace cozy moments, and enjoy everything fall has to offer.
